چکیده

Since a radio channel is shared among terminals in an ad hoc network, packet collisions are frequent. In case of transmitting packets especially using TCP, data and ACK packets are transmitted in opposite directions on the same radio channel. Therefore, frequent collisions are unavoidable, and this seriously degrades TCP throughput. It is possible to transmit to two or more nodes which adjoin from a certain node simultaneously on the radio channel. To reduce the likelihood of packet collisions when an intermediate node transmits both data and ACK packets, these two types of packet can be combined and transmitted at the same time to increase the efficiency of radio channel utilization. In this paper, we propose a new technique to improve TCP performance by combining data and ACK packets. Our proposed technique is applicable to generic ad hoc networks easily. By means of a simulation using networks with various topologies, we have found that throughput can be improved by up to 60% by applying our proposed technique. key words: ad hoc network, TCP, collision, throughput, simulation

Performance Improvement of TCP on a Wireless Ad Hoc Network

We describe a new technique for improving TCP performance in an ad hoc network that uses a table-driven type of routing protocol paying attention to short-duration link failure. We took as the object of research a Flexible Radio Network (FRN) which is an ad hoc network for data collection. We also evaluated the case in which the effect of the collision of a data packet and an ACK packet is supp...

Mitigating Intra Flow Interference Over Multi Hop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a predominant transport layer protocol for data transmission. The burst nature of TCP congestion control mechanism has often lead to heavy link layer contentions over multi hop ad hoc networks. Acknowledgements (ACK) that compete with the data packets for medium access in the reverse path, further add up to the contention levels. Such intense contention pa...

A New Intrusion Detection System to deal with Black Hole Attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

By extending wireless networks and because of their different nature, some attacks appear in these networks which did not exist in wired networks. Security is a serious challenge for actual implementation in wireless networks. Due to lack of the fixed infrastructure and also because of security holes in routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks, these networks are not protected against attack...

Alleviating MAC Layer Self-Contention in Ad-hoc Networks

The distributed coordination function (DCF) mode of IEEE 802.11 has become the defacto standard media access control mechanism for wireless ad-hoc network research. By design the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is unaware of the transport layer connection a packet belongs to. As a result packets belonging to the same connection contend for local spectra during transmission at neighboring nodes. This p...

Data Link Layer Control Methods for Performance Improvement of TCP over an Ad Hoc Network

In order to increase TCP performance in an ad hoc network, support from the lower layers of the transport layer is required. Although retransmission by the data link layer is generally required for errors on a wireless channel in ad hoc networks, duplicate packets due to the disappearance of a receipt check can be generated at the same time and increase network vain load. In the high load netwo...
